Lahore, 19 December 2023:
Following their impressive performances throughout the domestic season, leg-spinner Usama Mir, wicketkeeper-battler Haseebullah, and right-arm bowler Mohammad Abbas Afridi have received their first-ever calls-up to the Twenty20 international team. The National T20 Cup 2023–24 saw Sahibzada Farhan, who made his T20I debut for Pakistan in 2018, perform well at bat. He has since returned to the team.
For the first time, Shaheen Shah Afridi will be captain of the Pakistan team. Pakistan’s preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which is slated to take place in June 2024, officially begin with this series.
The 17-member team for Pakistan’s Twenty20 International Tour of New Zealand was put together by the national men’s selection committee, which was directed by Wahab Riaz. The tour will consist of five matches, which will be held in four different locations—Auckland, Hamilton, Dunedin, and Christchurch—between January 12 and January 21, 2024.
Following their Test tour of Australia, Pakistan will tour New Zealand, with the final match taking place in Sydney from January 3–7, 2024. On January 3, 2024, the team will leave Lahore for New Zealand, and on January 8, 2024, players who are currently in Australia for the Test series will join them.
Peshawar’s Muhammad Abbas Afridi was one of the National T20 Cup’s leading wicket-takers. The 22-year-old played in nine bouts at the competition and took home 14 scalps at an average of 16.43. He finished as the Pakistan Cup’s joint-highest wicket-taker earlier in the domestic season, amassing 15 scalps at an average of 15 from seven games. Additionally, he was recognized an emerging player.
Usama Mir, a leg-spinner, made his debut for Pakistan in the ODIs this year and has now received his first T20I call-up. He has so far appeared in 12 games in the format.
Haseebullah impressed with the bat during the domestic season, earning his first call-up. Due to his outstanding performance with the bat and gloves in the Pakistan Cup this year, he was named player of the tournament. In seven matches, he amassed 326 runs, including two hundreds and a half-century, and he was dismissed ten times behind the stumps.
Sahibzada Farhan, the top-order batsman for Peshawar, scored 492 runs in 12 National T20 Cup games. The right-handed batter amassed the highest individual boundary total in the Cup with 55 fours and 29 sixes, smashing a century and four half-centuries. Abrar Ahmed, who is uncapped, is back in the team as well. The team also includes Azam Khan, who last played for Pakistan against Afghanistan in March 2023.
Pakistan has chosen six pace bowling options: Aamir Jamal, Zaman Khan, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Abbas Afridi, and Shaheen, taking into account the circumstances in New Zealand.
Owing to injury, Shadab Khan, Ihsanullah, and Naseem Shah will not be included in the team. Three players who were on Pakistan’s team for the previous bilateral series—Shan Masood, Mohammad Haris, and Faheem Ashraf—do not go with the team.
Prior to their departure, the players included in the roster will be gathering for a training camp. The camp will be held in Lahore from December 28, 2023, to January 3, 2024. Muhammad Haris, Arif Yaqoob, Mohammad Imran, Mohammad Amir Khan, Sajjad Ali Jr., Shahab Khan, Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Ghulam, and Omair Bin Yousuf are the other nine players who have been called up to the camp.

Wahab Riaz, chief selector men’s cricket team, said:
We must develop our youthful talent carefully since they will be the future faces of Pakistan. Although this talent pool is the best, we still want to develop backups. We need to discover the kind of performances our fresh talent is capable of putting on. Moving forward, we must recognize our backup options within our player pool and give domestic players more credit.Throughout this series, Mohammad Haris has been rested. He is a component of our future plans and we are well aware of his skills. We also have Shan Masood in our plans, and he has been rested for this series. If we need him to cover any holes on the team, we will give him a call.
